Hatch is a vibrant and inspiring little studio in the Point Breeze neighborhood of Pittsburgh. It’s a space to make art, develop creative thinking, spark curiosity, and use your imagination. We hope to be a special place for families in the Pittsburgh community by offering a range of creative experiences including ongoing age-specific classes, specialty workshops, art-centric birthday parties, and open studio time where creatives of all ages can make art and explore new ideas alongside each other.

Children enter the world so eager to discover and create, whether building a tower or poking their fingers into a piece of clay for the first time. We want to build on these innate capacities, exposing our students to new ways of using materials and thinking like artists.

We believe that beautiful spaces can lead to beautiful ideas! The layout of our studio, the custom furniture designed and handcrafted by us, and the artistic materials we’ve chosen are all in service of amazing art-making experiences! By designing an inspiring environment, children and adults alike will feel comfortable to relax, explore, and problem solve through art.

Shannon Merenstein is the owner, creative director, and lead educator of Hatch. She is endlessly inspired by the creativity, joy, and imagination of children. Shannon returned to the wonderful city of Pittsburgh after graduating from Pratt Institute, where she studied painting and art education. For the past 8 years, Shannon has been an art educator and instructional coach at the Environmental Charter School in Pittsburgh, all the while dreaming up and testing out new and creative art projects for children. When she became a new mom last March, the inspiration for Hatch started to emerge. Looking for creativity-building experiences for her son Graham, Shannon saw a need for a studio like Hatch in the city. When they stumbled upon a former gallery in Point Breeze, Shannon and her husband Cole envisioned a beautiful space to inspire and activate creative thinking! Part art-making studio, part community-gathering space, Hatch aspires to be a special place in Pittsburgh for people of all ages to explore, create, and imagine.
